My fascination for both Karl Lagerfeld and the house of Chanel goes beyond my love for shades of black and white. I have always been interested in both the rich culture, mystique, and evolution of the brand, and Karl Lagerfeld's ability to transcend his Midas touch from objects of art to wearable clothes.
Last summer, I had the great privilege, of touring the original Chanel store in Paris on 31 Rue Cambon with my family. I was extremely thankful to have this private tour of both the couture studio, and Madame Gabrielle Chanel's apartment, sitting directly above the store and just below the atelier. I have featured some photos of the private tour capturing the alluring history behind the house of Chanel. Enjoy!
These are the stairs that lead both up to the atelier and CoCo's apartment. However, the stairs for Gabrielle were much more meaningful than that. The staircase features a mirrored wall that wraps around the winding case and is carried to the top. Here, Gabrielle would often sit at the top of the staircase, during her fashion shows, and look into the reflections of the mirrors to see the buyers and audiences reactions to the collection taking place.
This photo is of the couture studio. Here, socialites, politicians, and celebrities alike gather in this foyer space for their custom fittings. This whole section was redesigned by Karl Lagerfeld both reflecting the traditional aesthetic of the brand but with the addition of his infamous modern edge.
Both pictures are still featuring the couture studio. On the left and right sides, clear glass cases line the room with the most recent collection of couture gowns and outfits for Chanel's distinct clientele to choose from. Once they have selected the garment of choice, Chanel will work with them to create the exact measurements or even customize the runway piece to their likings. All very satisfying if you have half a million to spend!
